Village de Labescau to Labescau
Labescau may come from the Gascon l’abesque, meaning “the bishop”, to designate a property belonging to the bishop.
A village in the Landes de Gascogne region, Labescau is unique in being the only commune in the Gironde not to have a church.
The earliest known mention of Labescau dates back to 1283, when the bishop of Bazas had to share jurisdiction over it with the royal authorities. This lends credence to the hypothesis that Labescau was a woodland reserve belonging to the bishop. The bishop sold his estate to the Loupiac family, who owned it from 1488 to 1600. The local château dates from this period.
