60 km south-east of Bordeaux, Bazas thrives between the Landes forest and the Graves vineyards. This 25-century-old Gascon town combines economic dynamism (including the breeding of Bazas beef) with a rich heritage. Promenade de la Brèche, Jardin du Chapitre, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the Apothecary’s shop of the Saint-Antoine de Bazas hospital all tell part of its history.
A stronghold from the 4th century onwards, it was equipped with ramparts and monumental gates. On the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela, Bazas was the seat of a diocese until the end of the 18th century. As the seat of a Presidial Court, the town combined administrative and judicial functions and established itself as the most powerful town in the region that bears its name: the Bazadais. From this golden age, Bazas has preserved some superb remains, traditions and skills that are worth discovering.
