A dazzling building with a dual past, the Château du Ducal has plenty of surprises in store for visitors.
– France’s 1st women’s prison
It’s hard not to mention that the prestigious Château ducal in Cadillac was home to France’s first women’s prison, in 1818. In 1905, it became a “preservation school for young girls”, the equivalent of a children’s penal colony. This dark page, which can be visited today, was not turned until 1952.
– A duke who became a “half-king
A past that contrasts with the dazzling building constructed for the Duc d’Épernon (1554-1642). A favourite of Henri III and peer of France from 1581, the Gascon’s rise seemed to know no bounds. To assert his rank, in 1599 he ordered the construction of the ducal château, after having had 1/4 of the Cadillac fortified town razed to the ground. On this site, a French-style palace took shape.

Ticket office closes 45 minutes before closing time.
Closed on 1 January, 1 May, 25 December and 7 July.
Open free of charge on the 1st Sunday of the month from November to March.
